Barrow-in-Furness is the ideal destination for a week or long weekend break, with several attractions, close proximity to the Lake District, a wide variety of opportunities for shopping and great sports facilities.

Situated just 20 minutes from the Lake District, Barrow in Furness is the perfect gateway to access the Lakes themselves. The town also boasts long stretches of beach as well as two English Heritage sites at Furness Abbey and Piel Castle. Also known as the premier shopping hub of the region, the indoor market and Portland Walk Shopping Centre provide ample opportunities for retail therapy.

Rugby league is the leading sport in Barrow-in-Furness with the game having a long history associated with the town at both professional and amateur levels. Barrow Raiders played in the Co-op Championship for many years although currently the team are competing in Championship 1, playing at Craven Park. Barrow Golf Club and Furness Golf Club provide two 18-hole courses and the town also has its own American Football team. The Park Leisure Centre offers facilities for swimming, athletics, squash and a gymnasium.

Manufacturing has played a vital part in the town's past and still remains the biggest employer today. Although the steel and shipbuilding companies have left, BAE submarine manufactures are still thriving and employ 20% of the working population. More recently, Barrow-in-Furness is playing an important part in energy generation with four wind turbine farms proving to be useful new energy sources for the UK. Additionally, a newly built cruise ship terminal adds an exciting new prospect to the city's future.
