The Castle town is located in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, in Berkshire and is one of the official homes of the British Royal Family. It is an affluent town bordered by the River Thames to the north and by Charing Cross to the east. It is a very popular tourist destination, thanks to its world-class attractions.
Windsor Castle is one of the top attractions in the town; it has the distinction of being the world's largest and oldest occupied castle, given that it is the residence of the British Royal Family. A visit to the castle would not be complete without witnessing the changing of the guard. LEGOLAND Windsor Resort is a treat for the whole family, with thrilling rides and fascinating LEGO models scattered throughout the park. Ascot racecourse promises a memorable day out; full of colour, style and pageantry, especially during Royal Ascot in June, when members of the royal family attend the races. Windsor is also a shopper's paradise, with many of the country's top retailers having a presence here.
There is a wide variety of sports to see or take part in, including horse-riding, racing, polo, cycling and golf. Water-sports, such as swimming, sailing and rowing are to be found at various centres in and around the town. In addition, Windsor is involved in football through its local team, Windsor FC, while cricket is represented by Windsor Cricket Club.
Tourism is the mainstay of the local economy, evidenced by the revenue brought in by the various components of the tourism industry; accommodation, catering, retail, travel, attractions and entertainment.
